My name is Carl Tickle, I have been a Traditional Signwriter, Narrowboat Painter and Gilder since 1998, operating out of Woolston, Warrington, Cheshire.
I design and create beautiful and unique hand painted signs and practice the traditional art of coach painting, where I have adapted these skills to narrowboats for hundreds of private clients throughout the uk.
I specialise in custom paint jobs for a variety of applications. I have custom painted many challenging and creative pieces of art from: vehicles, showman’s wagons, steam engines, narrowboats, motor cycle tanks/ mudguards to sports memorabilia. I use only the highest-quality 1-shot enamels and epifanes paints and produce original designs.
I hope you enjoy the website and please feel free to leave any feedback and please take a look at the services I offer such as: gilded honours boards, pin stripes, narrowboat painting, traditional and modern signs, shop fronts, vintage/classic trucks, chalkboards, Latin inscriptions within religious building, vinyl lettering and window displays. I have also manufacture glass gilded signs for many prestigious shops and stores.
I have worked on the Grand National Honours Board at Aintree Racecourse and I am the main contractor at Haydock Park Racecourse, where I complete the gold leaf honours board after every race.
Over the years my other commissions have included Northwich narrowboats, Warrington’s Masonic hall, several golf clubs including Heswall, West Houghton, Lee Park. Also many stately homes including Inglewood Manor and Statham Lodge and the National Trust.
A commission I have done which I am very proud of was for the Lawn Tennis Association’s Championships at Wimbledon. Where I hand painted their logo onto all 21 rain covers for their tennis courts.
Checkout the newspaper article in the Warrington Guardian and the article on the UK Sign Boards website.
Private commissions also include helping to repaint the pinstripes and badges on the Roll Royce of Manchester United’s Romelu Lukaku and one half of Liverpool DJ camelphat just to name a few famous faces.
But personally my proudest moment was being able to help out during the COVID 19 virus of 2020 were me and my family raised £640 for the NHS staff at Warrington hospital to reward all their hard work through the pandemic.
Hi Carl, I would just like to say how pleased we are with the scroll you have done at our church. Your artwork almost glows, especially the gold leaf lettering and I’m sure it hasn’t looked as good as that since the chapel was originally built in 1887.
It has been a pleasure working with you and on behalf of the Warrington Masonic Hall Group I thank you for the care and expertise with which you have carried out the work. We are all delighted with the result and your skill has enhanced the quality of our Honours Boards. We are grateful to you for completing the work so efficiently.
Many thanks for your excellent work.
What a talented, conscientious artist is Carl Tickle (The Cheshire Brush)? He transformed our narrow boat, Paul Ann’ka, from a dull, tired boat, into a stunning, unique, floating work of art.
From the initial consultation to the finished product Carl was always on hand and approachable, no matter the time of day or evening. He was generous with his suggestions and guidance throughout the project. Apart from the agreed work, Carl went that extra mile – adding extra touches, which were simply stunning.
I had complete faith in Carl’s skills and I chose not to see the boat until it was completely finished, my husband decided to photograph the progression. He was so impressed with Carl’s work that each time he came home he tried to persuade me to look at the pictures – thankfully I resisted which meant that my first view of the boat was overwhelming! I could never have imagined we would own such a beautiful boat. I still find it hard to believe that one person could achieve as much as Carl did in the timescale of the job.
Thank you Carl, we appreciate your artistry, support, guidance and your sheer hard work.
We would just like to thank you for a fantastic job in painting our dog cart.
We had no idea what finish or even colour we were looking for but with your guidance, know how and fantastic skill it turned out better than we could have ever imagined we really didn’t think it would look so authentic.
The cart came to you old tired, a bit battered and it came back like it had just been built.
This cart will be at shows all around the country and we will be very very proud to show it off.
Even Paddy seems to be prouder pulling his cart.
Thank you so much and Best Regards
I just wanted to say how delighted I was with Carl’s re-painting of my narrowboat, Esther. I have had literally dozens of compliments from people while we have been out on sailing trips on how lovely she looks. The finish of the whole paintwork is very impressive and the painted flowers I asked for as part of the artwork look stunning. The paintbrush-quill he painted on the front locker lid is very classy too and the detailed painting of the multi-colour tiller is fantastic. It must have taken hours! I asked for and very much appreciated Carl’s advice about the different shades of colours for the paint and he definitely has a professional eye for this because everything has turned out perfectly. Thank you!!
If you want traditional signwriting look no further than Carl Tickle (Cheshire Brush). You tell him how you want it to look and he paints it just how you imagined it to be. I’ve had two lorries signed and lined up and have another booked in to be done.
