Traditional Signwriting & Narrowboat Painting

Reintroducing forgotten crafts since 1998

Cheshire Brush - Traditional SignwriterMy name is Carl Tickle, I have been a Traditional Signwriter, Narrowboat Painter, fine line specialist and Gilder since 1998, operating out of Woolston, Warrington, Cheshire.

I design and create beautiful and unique hand painted signs and practice the traditional art of coach painting, where I have adapted these skills to narrowboats for hundreds of private clients throughout the uk.

I specialise in custom paint jobs for a variety of applications. I have custom painted many challenging and creative pieces of art from: vehicles, showman’s wagons, steam engines, narrowboats, motor cycle tanks/ mudguards to sports memorabilia. I use only the best-quality 1-shot enamels and Epifanes paint systems to produce the highest quality paint finishes.

I hope you enjoy the website and please feel free to leave any feedback and please take a look at the services I offer such as: gilded honours boards, pin stripes, conservation led restoration projects, narrowboat painting, traditional and modern signs, shop fronts, vintage/classic trucks, chalkboards, Latin inscriptions within religious buildings, vinyl lettering and window displays. I have also manufacture glass gilded signs for many prestigious shops and stores.

Restoration of a famous century-old Ashton Titanic ghost sign

This century old Ghost sign is believed to be the last known surviving wall advertisement in the UK promoting the RMS Titanic.
This was a massive restoration project that required extensive research to be able create the most authentic results. The use of AI added a new aspect to this restoration project making it a fascinating read.

Traditional Signwriting

I annually update the Grand National Honours Board at Aintree Racecourse been the main contractor at Haydock Park Racecourse since 2009, where I complete the gold leaf honours board after every race.

Over the years my other commissions have included Northwich narrowboats, Warrington wolves, many Masonic halls, several golf clubs including Heswall, Westhoughton, Lee Park and the Open at the Royal Liverpool golf club. Also many stately homes including Inglewood Manor and Statham Lodge and the National Trust.
Also with TV appearances on salvage hunters and the bbc repair shop on the road.

A commission I have done which I am very proud of was for the Lawn Tennis Association’s Championships at Wimbledon. Where I hand painted their 6 meter logos onto all 21 rain covers for their tennis courts.
Checkout the newspaper article in the Warrington Guardian and the article on the UK Sign Boards website.

Private commissions also include helping to repaint the pinstripes and badges on the Roll Royce of Manchester United’s Romelu Lukaku and one half of Liverpool DJ Camelphat just to name a few famous faces.

Client Testimonials

Hi Carl, I would just like to say how pleased we are with the scroll you have done at our church. Your artwork almost glows, especially the gold leaf lettering and I’m sure it hasn’t looked as good as that since the chapel was originally built in 1887.
